Pre Appointment Care

1. Stay Hydrated

Hydrated skin is healthy skin, and it holds ink better. In the days leading up to your appointment, aim to drink plenty of water. Staying hydrated will keep your skin supple, making it easier for your tattoo artist to work on and helping the ink settle more evenly.

Tip: Bring a water bottle to your appointment to stay hydrated during your session as well!

2. Get Plenty of Rest

A well-rested body can handle longer tattoo sessions with less fatigue and discomfort. Try to get a good night's sleep before your appointment, especially if you're getting a larger piece. Being rested will help your body manage pain better and keep your energy up.

3. Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine

Avoid drinking alcohol and consuming excessive caffeine 24 hours before your appointment. Alcohol can thin your blood, leading to more bleeding during the tattoo process, which can affect the ink placement and make the session messier and more difficult for your artist. Caffeine can increase anxiety and make it harder for you to sit still, which may make the process more challenging.

4. Moisturize

Start moisturizing your skin daily a week before your tattoo appointment. Hydrated skin is easier to tattoo, and it can make a big difference in the quality of your tattoo. However, on the day of your appointment, avoid applying lotion, oils, or any other products on the area to be tattooed, as they can interfere with the tattoo process.

5. Eat a Healthy Meal

Make sure to eat a nutritious meal before heading to your tattoo session. Getting tattooed on an empty stomach can make you feel lightheaded or dizzy, and a steady blood sugar level will help you feel more comfortable. A good meal will also help your body handle the physical stress of a tattoo session.

6. Wear Comfortable, Loose Clothing

Consider the location of your tattoo and dress accordingly. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being tattooed. For example, if you're getting a leg tattoo, shorts or pants that can be easily rolled up are ideal. Also, make sure to wear something you don't mind getting ink or ointment on, as tattoo sessions can sometimes get a little messy.

7. Avoid Sun Exposure and Tanning

Avoid direct sun exposure or tanning on the area where you plan to get tattooed for at least a week before your appointment. Sunburned or tanned skin is more sensitive and can make the tattoo process more painful. It’s best to have your skin as close to its natural, untanned state as possible for the best results.

8. Avoid Shaving the Area Yourself

If you need to remove hair from the area that will be tattooed, avoid shaving it yourself unless your artist advises you to do so. Most tattoo artists will shave the area at the studio to avoid any small cuts or nicks that could become infected or interfere with the tattoo.

9. Prepare Mentally

Getting a tattoo can be a mentally and physically intense experience, especially for long sessions or large pieces. Take some time to relax and mentally prepare yourself before your appointment. Remember that breathing deeply and staying calm can help make the experience more comfortable.

10. Bring Entertainment for Longer Sessions

If you’re planning on getting a large piece that will take multiple hours, consider bringing something to keep yourself entertained, such as a book, a playlist, or headphones. Many people find that listening to music, podcasts, or audiobooks helps them relax and pass the time during long tattoo sessions.

11. Be Ready to Communicate with Your Artist

Come prepared to discuss your design and any last-minute adjustments or concerns you might have. Trust your artist's expertise, but don’t hesitate to express any preferences or ask questions about the process. Good communication will help ensure you’re both on the same page and that you get the tattoo you’re envisioning.

By following these pre-appointment care tips, you’ll help ensure that your tattoo session goes smoothly and that your tattoo heals beautifully. Taking care of yourself and preparing your skin will enhance the overall experience, making it more enjoyable for both you and your artist. Happy tattooing!
